Frostbite Engine Already Ported to DirectX 11 - Miscellaneous

PC Games Hardware has announced that they are going to start converting the Frostbite engine (The Battlefield engine wink) to Directx 11. This is certainly some exciting news, so please feel free to read below smile

Quote:
Johan Anderson, Rendering Architect at DICE, revealed some details about the Frostbite Engine, which is the base for the Battlefield games.

At the beginning of the porting progress the developer had to face a cross platform engine (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) with an exclusive DirectX 10 rendering path that had DX 10.0 and DX 10.1 features. The actual port of the Engine from DirectX 10 to DirectX 11 was done in three hours said Anderson. Searching and replacing the relevant parts inside the code required the most time.

Since currently there is no DirectX 11 hardware or appropriate development software, the Frostbite Engine was equipped with a switch inside the compiler that can be changed to DirectX 10 or DirectX 11. The developers at DICE are certain that the CPU load during API calls can be reduced noticeably with DirectX 11 drivers. Among other things the Frostbite DirectX 11 Engine offers HDR texture compression, Compute Shader and hardware tessellation for characters and terrain.

This means it won't run on DX9, which means it can't be used on Windows XP!

MS have cut support for XP anyway so it wont be long before newly released games only support Vista, Win 7 and onwards.

This is why I stopped playing computer games, every 6 months you have to spend money to keep your rig going. Forget that, a 360 is 200$..one time.

lol? they are doing totaly right, dx9 is old!!! remember that xp is about 8 years old and its stupid if they still work with it. btw 360 sucks cuz it is exactly what smith said but reverse!!! you cant upgrade an console but you can upgrade an pc and that means the 360 is already getting old and the graphics is stucked... you just cant get better graphics on the 360 games cuz the console cant be upgraded. like ps3 who thinked when they build it. it have an performance that still getting better. all games that is released to ps3 will have better graphics then the 360 version in the past 2 years

Well, speculation has it that there are some developers backing out of 360 development, because they are actually holding off for the next version of Xbox (maybe Blizzrd? I forget which ones)

That means the life span for our 360's is getting shorter and shorter
