yet again another update!!!

Well, as it seems the train of updates is heading full steam ahead I think its time to show you what I'm working on.

As you may know all the mappers work together on the maps.
When I joined the DCon team, Clooney gave me Gazala as my first job for the team.
Clooney did the terrain and it was my job to make sure it become that old Gazala we all know from Desert Combat.
So, I started adding all the statics like the houses, sandbags, trees, repair pads, etc.
I found out that you cant just place it there like it was on the original.
Maps in BF2 are larger then in 1942, so i had to scale the places of every building, fence and stuff like that so it would look like the original. I can't remember how many times i switched from ingame to the editor and back. After every section I did would save the map, go ingame and see if everything was in the right place.
But, that wasn't the biggest problem. As you all know your not allowed to copy the map from 1942. So Clooney used every reference he could find to build the terrain as best as it could be. And yes, it was indeed like Gazala, but when your in-game you find out that it still misses paths up the hills, or find roads that are not that wide as it should be. That's stuff you can't do all at once when you're making the terrain. So, I spend many, many hours adding roads, paths, adjusting height of the hills, etc.

When you make a new map you don,t have to worry about those things.
If you want a hill to be that high, you make it that high.
Remaking a map takes a lot more time because you have to recreate what others did.
As on picture 4 you can see a tank is going up a hill.
When Gazala was made, it wasn't planned that all that vehicles could drive up that hill.
But when a map is being played, people find roads and paths in all kinds of places.
It's our job to recreate those things.
So when I would go in game, I would grab a tank drive up that hill and keep adjusting it in the editor so it became the same steep hill as in the original.
I can't add all those places, but when this map is being used by people they will tell us which part of the terrain needs to modified, and we will try to do that in newer releases.

At first I thought "Well, its a big map, but it does not have that many objects in it."
Well... I'm at 1440 statics now, all placed 1 at a time and I'm still counting.
If i look back at all those fences i had to place I'll go insane again!

After the map was getting polished and shaped we still were not satisfied with the textures it had.
We wanted something new, but it had to have that old Gazala feeling.
I'm glad Clooney was thinking the same way.
After doing 3 totally different textures, he made one that was giving us that feeling we wanted and I think Clooney did a very good job on it!
I can go on forever telling you about all the problems we had to deal with, but i think its time to show you the pictures.

Please remember that this is still a WIP map, undergrowth is being added as we speak, and after that its time for the last decorations, sound effects, ambient effects and stuff like that.
I hope you recognize parts of Gazala from the pics and that you like the screens.
I'm off to the editor to work on the maps again.

awesome the only thing is the sun angle is not the same as it is in bf1942, but it looks kooler this way actually im gonna go play dcf right now

Looks awesome! If anyone ever creates a BF1942 mod for BF2 I hope you guys will allow them to use your map. It's amazing how accurate your map appears

That ground texture in the pic with the bradley hurts my eyes. Everything else looks great big grin

It kinda looks like the allied base is missing something though....I cant quite put my finger on it. Lack of sandbags mabye?

Personally I like the ground texture. It wasn't possible to make it look that good on the BF42 engine.Two Thumbs Up!
